What is Grow with Gompers? A joint initiative of the North Mayfair Improvement Association and the Gompers Park Advisory Council. We benefit from the full support of • Chicago Park District • North Mayfair community families and businesses • Alderman Margaret Laurino, 39th Ward • State Representative John D’Amico, 15th District • Congressman Mike Quigley, 5th District Why build a new playground? The existing playground is… • over 16 years old, deteriorating, and unsafe. • Plagued by worn out and disintegrating materials, unstable structures, rusty metal, and head entrapment hazards documented by the Injury Free Coalition for Kids at Children’s Memorial Hospital. • Under-utilized due to its limited selection of equipment, play areas that do not challenge older children and present many dangers for young ones, and a layout that leave a large amount of the playground unused. Statistics prove Gompers Park is a favorite destination for Chicagoans with a wide range of facilities, programs, and natural areas. Statistics show great numbers visiting this popular park. This unique, urban resource offers a pool, tennis courts, lagoon, riverfront, trails, camps, classes for all ages and more. Gompers Park requires a new playground to meet the needs of its many patrons. What could a new playground do? • Attract, welcome and engage all the families served by Gompers Park. • Create connections across the diverse cultures and generations in our community. • Include community members such as the disabled and senior citizens with accessible rubberized ground cover, comfortable shaded seating, and game tables. • Encourage imaginative, interactive play with safe, fun developmentally-appropriate play areas to interest children of all ages. • Protect children from busy Foster Ave with innovative design elements, structures, and strategies. Grow with Gompers ASAP: Awareness, Stewardship, Advocacy, and Partnership Grow with Gompers organizes many creative fund raisers and community programs, including Romp@Gomps, Community Yoga classes, Gomp-toberfest, and more to… • build awareness of our need for a new playground • extend and increase stewardship of this valuable space • advocate for creative renovations and sources of funding • And work together through partnership with our neighbors, community businesses, legislators, and the Chicago Park District. . |
